Default Extended Cranking, Gas Smell in Oil

Hi everyone,
on my 97 5.9 Magnum Ram 2500 I almost always have extended cranking to start. Once it starts it may be rough for a second but then idles and runs strong. Have not noticed any loss of power. If I restart within a minute or two after shutdown sometimes it starts instantly. Every other time there is extended cranking.

I dont have a Schrader valve on the fuel rail so I need to get a tee to test fuel pressure but that is on the list.

Also the fuel mileage is at best 11mpg. 10 or under isn't unusual. It does have a pretty big lift (by PO), I'm guessing about 6 inches and 285s. Is this normal fuel range for this truck? It doesnt seem to matter if its city or highway, mileage is same.

I'm guessing I have at least one leaky injector. Any way I can test for this?

Thanks,
Ryan

What gears?

Need to see what fuel pressure is doing.

Not sure on the gears. I'd assume 410.

Hoping to get the pressure checked today.

Never assume. If you think the gears may have been changed, I would pull the rear cover, and have a look.

If you are getting gas into the oil, you are running excessively rich. Need to find out why. (bad O2 sensor, bad coolant temp sensor, etc.)

Gas also could be getting in the oil from a leaky injector which would cause the extended cranking, correct?

The gearing doesbt really matter to me.

I was having extended cranking with rough idle for a few seconds after start up, after the first start it would start instantly, unless it sat for a while, turned out to be the check valve in the fuel pump
was bad, allowing fuel to drain back to the tank.
Just something for you to consider.

I've always wondered if where the fuel sync is set affects MPG. Some get 16, some 11. Would be interesting to know where their fuel sync is set.

Good to know about the check valve, thank you.
