5.9 magnum replacement compatibility
I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 sport with the 5.9 360 magnum. The current engine does run just not to well, it smokes pretty bad and the previous owner ran it really low on oil so I’m sure the bottom end is trashed. Well I was thinking about pulling one from the junk yard to use while slowly rebuilding this one. My question is what engines would be compatible? I know they used the 5.9 magnums for 95-01 but I am not sure if they are all they same. If anyone could please chime in on this it would greatly be appreciated!

Use your intake manifold, there were changes over the years, so, they are not always compatible. Basically, any 360, 93 or newer, will work. (just swap the intake.)

Oh okay, I gotcha. So what about the sensor issues? Would swapping the intake solve that issue, are the sensors he is referring to on the intake manifold?

Yeah, most of the critical sensors are on the intake. Biggest difference is, in 96, EGR went away, and in 98, the second coolant temp sensor also went away. Some connectors may be different over the years, but, just use your old sensor, and you should be golden.
So far as I know, the same cam was used all thru production..... (not 100% sure on that.) Programming changed in 98, along with how a lot of the interior systems worked. (instrument cluster, and such like.)
