If you are removing the transmission on the ground (not using a lift), its best to get the front of the truck up high, so that the transmission can be removed from under the truck. I find it helpful to have some universal sockets to remove the transmission bolts, along with some long 3/8" extensions to help access the bolts with the universal sockets.

As for the transmission rebuild, I make sure the rebuilder is performing a complete rebuild of the transmission, which includes the electronic solenoids, clutches, steels, bands and any worn/suspect hard parts. I also go with a rebuild converter and a shift kit.

Thanks for the reply, I have a 4 post hoist that I am using. Hopefully this will make the process much easier. Today I am taking out the drive shafts to get part of the exhaust pipe removed as its hanging below the transmission itself. This might sound stupid but does the transfer case come down with the transmission or come down as a piece by itself?

The transfer case can be easily unbolted from the transmission and removed 1st to make the transmission removal easier.

This.

Trans is a lot easier to handle without the t-case hanging off the end.

And when you remove the transmission crossmember, spread the framerails slightly to get it off easier. Hi-Lift is best tool for that, if you don't have one you can use bottle jack (pump side to the bottom) and piece of 2x4.

When I remove the transmission, I place the ratchet strap from framerail to framerail, and under the engine oil pan so it won't tilt down. I noticed with Cummins, that it has the engine mounts middle of the block, so the strap wasn't doing much about anything. But you can never be too safe when working with these machines.

Explain that a little better never heard of that trick

OP I can't stress this enough SPREAD THE FRAME RAILS!! Or it's a PITA to get the crossmember back in

I dropped both drive shafts as well as the exhaust removed, I still need the starter taken out and the wiring along with the transfer case, after this am I just looking at the bolts holding the transmission to the engine ?

Once you remove all the wiring you have the crossmember bolts and the bolts holding it to the engine also 2 bolts holding 4wd shifter to the transmission
