Default Engine code P1740

Title says it all I got the engine code p1740 and after doing some research it looks like it can be a whole lot of different problems with mt transmission. My truck still drives fine and has all gears so im not sure what this code is doing. Any of you guys have some advice on this code? 2001 dodge ram 1500 5.9l v8 4x4.

You sure you aren't losing O/D?

Clear the codes, and see if anything comes back. My old truck used to give me some phantom trans codes as well, but, the trans worked perfectly.

Lack of OD isn't really seen with P1740. LOCKUP on the other hand... wel when you lose lockup is when you'll usually set the P1740. Verify if it's going into lockup or not and if it is, it's something piddly and electrical. If you do not have lockup it's highly possible your converter is in needs of replacing though it could still be electrical

P1740 TCC O/D Solenoid Performance
It needs to go into overdrive before lockup.

Not quite

P1740: TCC or O/D solenoid performance. Torque Reduction Signal Circuit.

Torque Converter Clutch and O/D solenoid are 2 different things. Converter also locks in 3rd if the O/D switch is off, overdrive is not required at all for lockup.

both can be checked relatively easily. Take for a drive and see if overdrive works. If it does, great your solenoid is fine. Lockup can be harder to notice but either in overdrive or in 3rd with overdrive off there should be an rpm drop of roughly 2-300rpm. Easier to notice with cruise on to take your foot out of the equation. Should also feel like it gets more sluggish/ doesn't want to increase in rpm when it engages.

Though i read in the service manual it locks up after od. Seems my truck acts that way also, Notice the 2-300 rpm drop right after od engages. I just looked up and re read the section on the lock up, If the od switch is off it will engage in third. Od switch on it will engage after od. This is for a 96 so don't know if it changed after that.

I had a 96, now have a 98, both do TCC before O/D. (I can see it happen on the tach.) TCC is a small drop, O/D is a BIG drop.
