Gas tank strap bolt spins freely-broke trying to get off rusty nut
I was trying to replace the gas tank straps on my 98 Ram 1500 sport due to one of them being completely rusted out. I went to try to take the nut off the mounting bolt but it was so rusted that the bolt must have snapped off up inside of the frame. What should I do? The nut and bolt just spin together and I don't make any progress with it.
I don't know. I'm not a welder. The bed may have to come off if you want the stock setup. Or make a new mounting location that is accessible. If there's that much rust, that may be your best bet.
Which strap bolt is giving you the problem - the strap at the rear or the front? On my truck, the bolt for the front strap is actually a stud that is made into the cross member. I had to replace that cross member recently, as my original cross member was nearly rusted out, so I replaced it. The rear strap on my truck is actually held by a bolt and nut - you should be able to get a wrench on the top of the bolt without having to remove the bed to keep the bolt from spinning when removing the nut.
