Default 4x4 not working - where do i begin?

Well with the snow storm raging thru MN I found out today that my 4x4 is not working on my 98 Ram 1500 sport. Is this something I can go about fixing myself? What are some causes of my issue?

Vacuum leaks are generally the main cause, does your cruise control work?

The 4x4 is controlled by vacuum, there are plastic vacuum lines running down to the actuator on the front axle. I would start at the actuator and follow/inspect the vacuum lines. the plastic lines like to break and then there is no vacuum to the actuator to engage the 4wd.

See if you have vacuum at the actuator or you can eliminate the cad all together for about $250

When you put it in low did it feel like it was in low range, only the front wheels weren't pulling? If so then the transfer case is working fine and your issue is in the front axle vacuum actuator, you can check the lines for leaks, sometimes the actuator itself goes bad. A cheap and easy fix is to pull the assembly off and slide the collar and shift fork over and put a spacer on the shaft for the shift fork so it stays engaged.

AFAIK, there's only one option which fits on every 2nd gen truck.
