Erm, they bolt together, with a head gasket..... there isn't any clearance. There are various thickness head gaskets though. What is it you are trying to do?

Each head eld has a straightness tolerance. I have to change a head gasket for the third time. I want to measure the straightness of the head and deck before I put it back together. Something is not right. I’ve been doing head gaskets for 40 years and have never had a situation like this.

This should help. https://www.enginebuildermag.com/201...straightening/

If you are having issues with getting a head gasket to seal, you might want to take the heads to a quality machine shop to have them checked/surfaced.

I've seen big block mopar heads with a twist, causing that kind of issue. Not much experience with small blocks though. I'd take the head to your local good machine shop and let them check it out, they have the tools and experience to validate.

. I did that. I had them completely rebuilt at a local engine shop. That’s why I am asking about the tolerance. This head originally had a .004 gap. They shaved the head, and when I take it off, I want to measure it myself.

What exactly is the issue you are having?

Do you have the tools to check it? Need a mechanics straight edge, which isn't cheap..... and then some feeler gauges. (which you can get just about anywhere.)

Please describe exactly what issues you're having - also, have you chased all of the head bolt threads in the block with a tap to ensure that the head bolts fully engage?
