Default Need help with 46re trans

1996 ram 1500 sport.
2wd
5.2l
Auto.
Bought the truck from a friend, when he purchased the truck the motor was junk.
He pulled a low mileage 5.2 and trans from a 97 sport 2wd, and started I stalling it.
Winter closed in and the snow made it so be couldn't finish.
I just bought the truck off him for 750 and today I started hooking everything up.
Instantly found a problem.
The connector on the top of the trans is only a 3 pin connector, the trans he pulled out of this truck had an 8 pin connector.
What does that mean? Will this trans not work?
Yes I checked the tags and ran the codes and it is the right trans.
I have access to the old trans.... Can I just swap the valve body over and call it good?
Do I have to swap the torque converter too?
Has anyone delt with this issue? I need help, this truck is supposed to be running and driving and road Worthy by Monday night.
Any help would be really appreciated. Thx guys

If the trans that got installed is a 3 pin, it is not a 97 trans. That's a 46RH, and some VERY early production 96 trucks got 'em, but, anything newer should be an RE. (with the 8 pin) You could make it work, but, the PCM is going to whine about trans sensors that aren't there.

Nope. Won't work. The trans body castings are different. No mechanical governor in the newer one, so, I would suspect passages will be different as well.

So, I found out the guy lied to me about what year the eng and trans came from. They're actually from a 95. He was my coworker at the auto salvage yard I work at, you'd think he would know how to look up interchange. Luckily my boss is gonna let me get the original trans back
