Default Truck won't start, key problem.

Hey guys, back again.
Got my other problem fixed yesterday, but today i couldn't start my car!
For a while i had to try a few times with my key till it started! I used to push up my shifter and it useually started then.
But now it won't anymore.. been trying a half hour , can't start..
Is there any quick way to bypass my key? Hotwire it? And what about steeringlock?

My key turns over to the ignite position, but doesn't crank the motor. I'm sure it's the key, as it's been getting slowly worser last weeks..

If i'm right this would be the right replacement for the lock cylinder? Dorman 926-061

Thanks in advance!

I hate it when people call their truck a car, especially a Gen2 Ram truck like mine. My son calls his van a car and I hate that too. Just a little venting here folks. Nothing else to see here. Move along now. Move along. Move along.

On the not start thing though what exactly is going on there? Do you hear a clicking sound? Or is it more like a churning sound like the truck (truck I say) is at least trying to start, but it just won't?

If you're turning the key and not getting any sound at all (except for the sound of the switch moving on the column) then I'd say yes it is either the switch or maybe just a bad cable connection at the battery. I had to replace my starter once and that sounds like it is trying to start, while there is still battery power, but it just won't.

I'd clean the battery cables and if that doesn't work then I would replace the switch and then if that doesn't work I would probably replace the starter which comes with a new solenoid..

I'm dutch everything is a car around here haha but i get your point...
Now my truck doesn't bother to do anything, i only hear my switch turning. It doesn't crank the starter..
I'm pretty sure it's something in the cab related, possible steering column? Just found out if i force my steering wheel and column up right, it always starts.. as soon as i let my wheel go , it doesn't...

I took the ignition switch apart, and it moves through all positions...

Thanks in advance ;p

Are you saying when you tilt it all the way up (towards the windshield) it starts?

Yes man, if i push my steering wheel upwards and to the windshields it's able to start.. else it won't... ( I'm not talking about changing steeringwheel position, just putting some pressure on it.. )

What about if you put the trans in neutral?

Haven't tried it with my trans in neutral. Could it be trans related? Or shifter related?

More likely neutral safety switch related, or the shift linkage has gotten sloppy, and needs some attention. There are plastic bushings that will disintegrate when they get old, and will need to be replaced.

So if the truck would start while in neutral, this would be the problem? And is there any known possible temporary fix? As it takes a while to order parts..

Thanks

If it will start in neutral, then it is likely just an adjustment/linkage problem. You would have to crawl under there, and wiggle things around, and see where the slop is. Then get the parts to fix it. I think the bushings are actually available at your local auto parts store, in the Dorman "Help" section. If you get a decent parts counter guy, he will probably know exactly what you are talking about when you explain the problem to him.

See if it starts in neutral, if it does, crawl under there, and have a look. Should be pretty easy to figure out what you need.

You are Welcome.
