Default Intermittently runs rough

I have a 1998 1500 with 5.9 gas. Customer states from time to time to just starts missing and running rough. So much so that it will even die at stops but always cranks back up. Gas mileage drops off terrible while missing and won't shift into overdrive. I've had it 2 weeks and can't get it to act up one time. Runs and drives like a new truck. Never throws a code while missing. Sounded like pcm to me so ordered one from flagship one (Dodge dealer said they dont sell or program computers and I would have to get an aftermarket pre-flashed pcm). Drove into shop running great with original pcm. Installed new one and it runs rough showing #7 and #8 injector circuits open. Replaced old pcm and ran fine. Company sent replacement pcm and it was worse. Wouldn't even run. Replaced with original pcm and ran fine again. Not sure if I should keep trying the pcm or am I'm overlooking something else that would cause a bad miss that only happens periodically and then fixes itself. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Intermittent problems are always fun. (singing to the choir.....) Could be any number of things, unfortunately. Will your scanner do logging? (of course, in order to log the issue, it actually has to act up......)

Not to sound too rough here, but it's time to throw in the towel and give it back to the customer so they can get it to a proper shop. I know that if it were my truck, I wouldn't want a mechanic guessing and throwing parts at it over and over (define 'insanity').

Just say you can't duplicate the problem and let them be on their merry way. No shame in that.

That's the problem. I can't get it to act up. I've ran it about 40 miles and let it idle a couple hours and still no luck

Yeah, give it back to the customer. If it won't do it while you have it, you can't troubleshoot the problem....... Either that, or start using it as your daily driver..... if the customer will allow it.

I agree. I have had my share of pcm problems with dodge but this one has me stumped. Thought I might try here to see if anyone else has had the same problem. Thanks for the advise. Sometimes I guess I just have to hear it from someone else

I would say you have multiple problems. Sadly you can't get it to happen when the vehicle is with you. I had a problem once where my truck was running on 2 cylinders with all cylinders missing. Started right back up and never happened since then (about 2 years ago)

Shawn, did you ever get this fixed? This sounds very much like ours.

I changed the CPS and it "fixed" it for a week or so, but it is back as bad as ever.

I am not one to just replace stuff, but I have done distributor cap, rotor and leads, EGR, Camshaft Position and Oxygen with not luck. I will try with another CPS but think I am on your merry-go-round. I was about to get a replacement PCM, but after reading your story, I will not bother.
