Default Temperature control switch sender

good morning everyone!!!
new to this site in some need of a little help with my 1996 dodge ram 1500 5.9l 4x4.
getting my hunting truck ready and started changing all my senors/sender. After taking out my temperature control sender out thats located behind the alternator next to the thermostat, the new one doesnt fit at all, and after multiple auto store shops, web sites, and hours trying to figure this out. So for giggles i tried putting the old one back in and it doesnt fit!!!
Now what i mean by doesnt fit is the sender is just a tad to big....... Came out just fine now just lost... Ugh!!! Please help lol

Those are pipe threads, thus, tapered. If it came out, it should go back in.

There are two temp sensors on your truck. One on the passenger side of the intake, near the heater hose, that is a one-wire sensor, for the gauge in the dash. The one cleverly concealed behind/below the a/c compressor is a two wire sensor, and that is if for the PCM.

Maybe you aren't holding your face right?

Yeah, they can be fun, and just when you think it has started, it'll be in the hole crooked. But, if it came out.... it's gotta go back in. Check the hole, make sure the threads are clean.

And your tongue needs to be hanging out the LEFT side of your mouth, and you must bite down with no less than 2 pounds of pressure. (but, no more than 2.1, else it will fail again.)

Either that, or ask your wife/girlfriend to do it. Then you can feel like an idiot when she walks out, screws it right in, and then looks at you like you just grew another head....... Yeah, I've done that before.

You could buy a pipe tap at the hardware store and clean the threads. Take the original sensor so you get the right size. 1/8" or maybe 1/4" I think
