Default Confirmation of wiring colors

Hello everyone,

I hope this isn't going to get me crap listed on my first post. I'm new. I have a 1998 Dodge ram 3500 diesel. I just want confirmation on a simple subject. I just don't know anyone to pm or ask yet so I'm posting. This truck has the pull **** headlight switch. No drl. No fogs.

Under the hood. Coming out of what I'll call the fuse/relay box.

The red/org wire and the violet/wht wire are the signal wires for the headlights correct? I've seen a lot of conflicting information. Sorry to post for such a simple question. I just need to find the wires before the split to left and right headlamps.

Thankyou,

Keven

Welcome, and not a dumb questions at all! This is what the forum is for!

Black and Yellow is the wire before they split into all the clearance lights and turn signals.

According to my Chilton's manual:
1997-00 Ram 1500-3500 chasss w/ dual wheels

Pink/Red comes from battery to headlight switch---------then Black/Yellow to all lights (not headlights)

The Red/orange and Violet/White come from the multi-function switch to the headlights:

R/O------------Hi-beam indicator and left and right headlight hi-beams
V/W-------------Left head light and right head light low-beams
B/Y--------------clearance lights, turns, fenders, and license plate

Default Awesome! Ty!

My idea was to cut those wires there. And put my relays there. For the headlights. I'm guessing that's my next question. When I put in my headlights i ran heavier gauge wire and better grounds. So if I cut them there. Relay them. That in theory should work.

That is how I did relays on my truck. Wire coming from the light switch goes to relay pin 86, and from pin 87 it goes to the lights.

Default Awesome

Thanks so much. It's highly appreciated. Because I already upgraded the wiring up front. And even if I didn't I would have done it this way. It looks kind of fun to get to tucked there in by the battery and p pump. Lol.

Thanks for all the help. I've been through 8 switches on 3 trucks. I've had enough!!!

Although I have about 10 in my toolbox that I smooched from the junkyards for 1.00 a piece. And 4 plugs. Haha.

Download the appropriate manual for future reference:

https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...e-manuals.html

Section 8W in the manual is wiring (from memory).

Default Update

Well. The relays are installed and mounted nicely. Very easy to do and a very happy switch. Headlights are brighter. Marker lights and cab lights are brighter. Not surprising though! Thanks to everyone. Just wanted to post an update. Whole job took about an hour. That's with proper shrink wrapping and soldering.

Are you aware there was a recall or TSB on this?

The headlight circuit is just one that's fails. The driving lights also can be effected. Put led lights in for marker, cab etc.. That will cut the amp load on the switch way down and you shouldn't have any issues then.

Yes I did read that bulletin. I already have leds for cab lights. Marker lights. And I got some aftermarket led fog lamps. I'm very happy right now to say the least.
