Default 5.9 magnum timing chain

Hello, Timing Chain 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 van 360-5.9 Magnum. So I hop in and go to start , engine kind of locked and then started sounding like a singer sewing machine with a turbo!!?? Ok so I'm a old **** had nothing better to do so I tore the nose of [ rad-fan- water pump- timing cover etc.) Timing Chain as louse as my baules..Installed new chain & gears 6 o'clock cam gear 12 o'clock crankshaft. With Victory close at hand I turned it over and won't start😓😓 redard distributor and started..pulled # 1 cranked to TDC and ✔ timing gears (cover still of) distributor on # 1 but camshaft gear at 12 o'clock not 6 o'clock!#! Could I be that of 180% Well only run if redard all the way and then advance .. Any backup Greatly Appreciated..

With the dots at 6 (Cam) and 12 (crank) #6 cylinder is actually in firing position. So it seems your timing is set correctly. What are you not getting? Spark or fuel?

People have had problems with timing marks. Some sets have big dots that are not the timing marks. The real timing marks are small dots. Please post a picture of the gears so we can have a look.

I stol....er...borrowed your photo. That's one thing about doing something as long as I have, I don't realize all the little details at times. The timing marks are matching marks.

Default Timing Chain 5.9 magnum 2000 ram

Thanks for reading..OK lots of fuel & spark , Timing small dots lined ☝ It well run totally redarded then advance distributor..My question is with camshaft gear at 12 o'clock and crankshaft at 6 o'clock (after spinning engine) the rotor is at # 1 ?? I thought it should be at # 6 could the cam have turned 180% with old sloppy chain and can I pull distributor and have rotor position at # 6 TDC. THE OLD MAN DOWN THE ROAD....

When BOTH are at 12 o'clock, #1 is in firing position. Did I type it wrong previously? (goes to look, nope. I typed it right. )

As I recall, the timing gear alignment is pretty standard with most engines as in this GM installation:
. This would make Dan12s answer correct.

I'll have to dig out a repair manual but I seem to remember using a straight edge from cam center and crank center to align the marks between them. That would put the crank mark at 12 o'clock and the cam mark at 6.

Yep, and the distributor rotor should be point at number 6, with the dots aligned that way. Don't really need the straight edge, you are limited in how far off you can be by the chain in any event. (another reason I prefer the double roller timing sets.)
