Questions about Harmonic Balancer pulley on V10
New member and my first ever forum sign up, I own a 94 Dodge ram with the V10 and the harmonic balancer backed off and is rested on the timing cover, I had to get a smaller belt on what was left of it to limp it the 100 miles back home. I am currently replacing the pulley, but my question is how do I install it probably? Any specific direction? Since there is no keyway I'm rather confused. I would assume you can't just plop her on and torque her to the recommended 130lbft. Thank you for your time very much appreciated and thanks for the thread 👍. I usually get a lot of information from this forum but never decided to be a member till now, thank you for that, the people on here have saved my *** more times than I can count.
Looking thru the service manual, that is exactly what you do..... stick it on there, and use the special tool to press it into place.

So what would the special tool be other then the impact or wrench? Thanks for the information
Thanks for the information, much appreciated. I didn't know that, I was really confused when I got my new balancer. So what do you think it could have hurt with me driving the vehicle a hundred miles back home with that pulley broken off? Because I just ran a shorter belt around that center cylinder and bypass the smog pump because that seized up aswell.
And thanks again for moving me to the right place, the information so far is greatly appreciated
No harm at all. Engine does not need the damper for balance and you made it home. Can get the old one off with a smaller three jaw puller, if you are lucky, sounds like you were lucky. Grease the threads and the washer of the retaining bolt to put it back on with a long 1/2drive ratchet, impact if you are one of those impatient types, just be careful. Clean the crank snout as the pulley inside is tapered to fit the crank, no key. Torque is fairly high, 135ft/lb. should settle in with good alignment to the accessory belt drive. LISLE makes a nice kit, 51450, a puller. I've done it both ways. Good luck. Helena Senior class of '81.

Slipped off the back and was able to get a smaller belt around the center portion after repositioning the tensioner with a little modification and bypassing the seized smog pump and swapping out the idler and tensioner pulley for different sizes
I've owned atleast 5 V8 Rams and 1 24v Cummins all between the years of 94 and 2001, This is my first V10 Ram so it has been quite the learning curve and this forum had all the information including the people in this thread that helped me keep it on the road. Thanks again any more advice or information about these engines and what I should be checking for would be very much appreciated.
The special tool is for installing the balancer. It looks a lot like the installation tool for power steering pump pulleys. You can use the crank bolt, but, be VERY careful doing so. Don't wanna strip the threads in the crank.
