Default headlight switch

I have a early 2002 dodge ram 2500 sport that I have had to replace the light switch, since the replacement I have noticed that it is getting quite hot, the fog lights are currently disconnected. I am considering changing the four headlights to led bulbs and installing led fog lights also. Has anyone tried this and did it solve the problem of the switch heating up or should I be directing my efforts to reduce the heat in switch somewhere else?

There are "heavy duty" headlight harnesses available out there in internet land, that take power for the headlights directly from the battery, via a couple relays. I know they are available for the non-sport trucks, and I think I have seen them for the sport trucks as well. Check LMC truck, and see if they have 'em. If not, for a few bucks, you could probably set something up yourself. Going this route, it takes the load off the headlight switch, as it just controls a couple relays. Much better idea.

Welcome to DF! Moving this to second gen ram section for ya.

LMC offers them for the Sport, quad, 2 bulb, and even projector lights for our trucks

You can build one for a little less than what LMC wants. I thought about doing it in my free time

Don't tell anyone but a guy in the corner of Austria sells them. I book a "vacation" every few months months some. Hard getting it past customs though

Did you happen to look at the connector that plugs into it? There was a recall on the earlier trucks where the switch terminals would heat up and melt the connector. I believe yours has a different style switch in it but wouldn't hurt to investigate it. See if the running lights or headlight circuit is whats heating up. If it's the running lights you can replace the standard bulbs to led and that will cut the load on the switch. I believe the link below used to have the relay and harness for the second gens but not sure if it's still available.

I have a 98 (not 98-1/2) and was expecting to see headlight connector and/or switch damage when I did my dash rebuild, but to my surprise it was in pristine condition.
I do plan on adding relays and HD harness, but was just surprised considering the prevalence of melted switches/connectors.

Sorry for detracting from the OP.

I'm with you on this, still have the factory switch on mine with no problems at all.
