98 1500 with 46RE with codes P1757 and P0740
98 Ram, 4wd, 360, 46RE, Sport Model.
Originally my truck was having shifting issues and would rarely come out of first. Someone on here recommended unplugging a connector on the transmission and it column shifted fine so that meant replacing the transmission sender and solenoid. Fresh oil, new filter, away we Go. Drove it for 40miles or so and it started to feel like it took a bit of effort to get it to start driving. Take foot off the brake and it doesn't do much, give it a little rev and it lurches forward and you're rolling. Same in reverse, almost feels like you have to persuade it to make it want to move and doesn't really creep.
So today we took it on a bit of a ride through some old roads trying to shake it down and see if it does anything weird but it didn't at first. At one point my Jeep friend got stuck and I had to make a 10 point turn to spin around and pull him out . 4H, reverse and first only and it felt like I had to rev the truck really high in order to get it to attempt to turn the wheels. Albeit there was a bit of snow but nothing too crazy. When I backed up to his Jeep I got an OD off warning and a transmission temperature warning. So I plucked him out and limped my way back to the main roads. About a 1/4 mile down the road (still in 4H) the lights went off and nothing happened after. Drove it back to our shop and code reader threw P1757 and a P0740. The first one isn't read by our reader and the second one is apparently something to do with a torque converter solenoid?
I drove it back to my house and it shifts a little late while driving but still does it, shifts down on the highway (had it up to 65mph), and I worked the column shift which seemed to be working as well
I'm kind of stumped as to what I try fixing next. Any ideas?
So it throws those codes, seems to need persuasion to get it rolling, and little bit of a late shift (TV cable maybe?)

Looked online at how to check the band's for proper tension and they seemed fine to me at the time. Not sure the brand of the parts, I ordered them a couple months ago but only installed them on Saturday, I'll have to check when I swing by the shop. Original filter was plugged and there was some metal on the magnet but that was also back in November. When I dropped the pan to put the parts in this weekend past the oil was a little darker but nothing crazy, some shavings on the magnet too.
Oil wasn't bad so I re used the oil and filter which had maybe 20km on them. Truck only had maybe 70km on the oil and maybe 50km on the sensor / solenoid .

I'll have to go get the exact part numbers tomorrow then. I took the truck for supper and column shift works perfect. It's almost like I'm trying to start it in third gear every time. Start in 1-2-3 and it's fine. But doing 20mph and I bump it down to second and it shifts down...

But a check valve? Not going to lie. Didn't know there was one let alone where it would be

P1757 Governor Pressure Above 3 PSI In Gear @ 0 MPH
P1740 TCC O/D Solenoid Performance
I don't think this is sensor related(unless it's stuck in gear) more like a mechanical issue. A pressure test would probably be a good idea. (It's at the bottom of the page)

Ok so find a pressure gauge that threads those ports. Put it in the appropriate gears as marked in the list on the left while looking for the readings at whatever specific port and test drive it.
Probably start at the governor.
I understand everyone's situation varies but is this big enough of a problem that I shouldn't be driving this around trying to diagnose? (My shop for working on this is 12 miles away and then I commute 1/2mile to work daily)

Figured I'd update. Decided to drop the transmission pan to check what the oil looked like and it was pretty dark. So then I pulled off the filter and she was plugged solid. Someone told me a good way to check the filter is to try and shine a light through it and I couldn't seen anything.
So I swapped out the filter and replaced 7 quarts of oil. Took it for a drive and it seems to be running better now. There was minimal metal on the magnet but the oil looked dirty. Maybe this will take a couple oil changes to finally get it running right. Shifts better, starts better, actually creeps when I put it in gear... That's everything I really needed fixed.
Just out of curiosity, what do you guys run in your transmissions? I think it's rated for ATF+4 or the Mopar factory stuff but some friends suggested running Dexron VI.
