Default 97 1500 bad tranny

I have a 97 1500 5.2 with a bad transmission. I am just wondering if a 44RE out of a 96 dakota 5.2 will work until I can get the 46RE rebuilt. I looked at the transmission pinouts and they seem to match. I know it isn't the ideal situation but the 44RE came with the truck and I am trying to save cash in order to get this on the road faster. I know the 44RE is a weaker transmission and will lower the load capacity. But for a temporary fix would it work without additional parts? I plan to use the transfer case from the current transmission.

Are the transmissions the same length? If they are, it will probably work, though I wouldn't do any heavy work with it.

I haven't been able to determine the length from the front of the case to the tail of the OD housing I will probably measure that when I get off work. They both use the same case up to the OD assembly from what I've read. But you know its the internet so I don't believe everything I read lol.

Smart man.

They are *probably* the same length, but, I would measure it anyway. Don't wanna go thru all the work, only discover that it won't work.

Your torque converter may not bolt up to the flex plate the the wire connection for the lock up solenoid may not plug in either.
