Default Transmissions/what can I do?

So I'm still fairly new to the 2nd gens and am always looking to do things to test around and do better. I have a 1999 Ram1500 with the 5.9 a d I believe the 46re transmission. I've was thinking, how interchangeable are the transmissions and what is the best one that dodge has made. Can I possibly switch to something newer or am I just better getting it out and rebuilding it and if that's the case what's the best company for tranny rebuild kits ?

You can use and Hemi transmission as they use the same bolt pattern but it gets expensive. I would just upgrade the 46RE

Yeah that's why I said it gets expensive fast some controllers (like for the ZF 8spd) the torque curve of your engine has to be programmed to the controller

Chris, the 68rfe is dodge's best transmission going todate, but finding one isnt cheap. Probably attached to a 6.4 hemi but anyways. You 4wd or 2wd? 46re is a **** pile sorry man, but thats what we are given. At least they are cheap to rebuild (of course you have to do that often). Whats wrong with your current 46re? You could always upgrade with 48re parts, still a **** pile. Sorry guys, I hate just the 46-48re transmissions.

Don't want to highjack this thread but, I guess I have the 46RE in my 96 RAM. Issue I have is that sometimes it shifts great and other times it revs until I let off and then it shifts. Does this mean a rebuild or is there a solenoid that went bad.

The 46RE can be an excellent transmission If it's built right.
