Default Upgrade to cummins ??

Hey yall. I love my 96 1500 to death and invested thousands and thousands into this rig over the years of owning it. Only thing I cant stand is how sluggish it still is after building the motor and getting 4.10 gears installed it still struggles to climb a hill or get up to speed in time. We just got back from a camping trip this weekend. And the truck does not like to go up any hills pretty much gotta slam it to the floor and scream the rpms and watch the tranny heat right up .
got me really thinking of getting a cummins it probably wouldnt even know that camper is there.
last thing I was thinking of doing is beefing the tranny up. Should I save my money and just move on?

I have owned many Cummins (a lot of 2nd gens 12 & 24 valves) and third gens. Personally they didn't impress me unless they were upgraded. I think you may have something wrong with your motor (if it's a 360) because mine with 40in tires and 3.55s would climb hills pretty easy. Obviously it if your money and you may love them. They are more expensive (Maintenance, oil, fuel) and when something breaks it is costly. For example a lift pump failed on one of mine. It was $600 to buy a known failure or $1500 to upgrade to something that won't fail. I swapped a 360 in it.

See if someone you know has one see if they will let you hook up your camper and the with it for a short distance up hill. If you like it buy one

You know what your totally right. I am scared of costs of a diesel. I ain't really into dealing with headaches all the time.its funny you say that that you werent really that impressed I'm hearing that alot lately. I just wish this truck was a 3/4 ton atleast. I'm so invested in this that I probably woildnt see my money back. i guess I'll just let er scream up the hills till she blows lol

Yes it's a 360. I'm impressed you could do that with that big of tires and gears. I had 35s on here with 3.55 and the truck was a dog. So I went to 33s and 4.10s and it's better now. Truck just doesnt like climbing the hills with that little camper that's built like a tank lol. Here's motor work I had done it aswell. Straight piped with magnaflow muffler. Deep tranny pan and bigger oil cooler. You think it would get a little more punch. Maybe I should look into a tuner next and cough up some more cash

I personally believe a tuner will get you the full potential of your upgrades (especially the cam) because something is wrong. I'm not saying diesels are bad here. I just wasn't impressed. I just bought a 3/4 ton for $800 and the first thing I did was swap in a 360. For the money you were in though I would have swapped a Hemi in. You would of also had a 5spd automatic.

Looking at hypotecs site for your came, first thing it says is 'requires a tune'....... If you are running on the stock PCM, that is your problem.
