Default Transmission

I have a 97 dodge 1500 5.2 v8 lamarie slt 2 wheel drive I know I'll probably have to rebuild my transmission but want any advice before I do we dropped my transmission pan and found acouple of rocks in there and quite a bit of shavings and acouple of small chunks of metal we also noticed while under there none of the electrical components down there were plugged in I was wondering if this could be a sign that the transmission needs to be rebuilt or if I could plug everything back in and give it ago I recently bought this truck and I've replaced the transmission relay sensor and I've also bought a shift solenoid and transmission filter and the seals to replace I dropped the transmission pan and thats when we found all the other stuff it does start up and will only go in first it's a automatic and has no drive only first and barley any reverse its also throwing a governor code as well I'll try and answer any other questions any advice tips or anything at all would be great thanks

Have any pictures of what you found? Big metal chunks usually means it needs rebuilt or will need it very soon.

Any debris around the connector will cause problems. Do you Know if you have a 44/46RE or 44/46RH transmission? An RH transmission maybe a sticking governor or the RE maybe a soleniod.

I do not I do know it's throwing a governor code and I have bought the solenoid and that's why we dropped the pan then found all the other stuff so thats why we haven't move forward yet trying to see where to go

Why didn't you use periods?
"A period is a small dot-shaped punctuation mark that is used at the end of any sentence that is intended to make a statement."
And I'm not trying to be a wise a$$ but a lot easier to read that way. Are the "rocks" made out of steel or aluminum? Any obvious things in there you see? You may want to drop the valve body to get a better look.

the rocks are actual rocks you would find on the street or on the ground. The metal pieces are a little smaller then a nickel and there was 1 or 2 of the they looked to be steel pieces and then a chuck of something that we could not identify and nothing looked wrong in the transmission pan but the wires that connects into the transmission were not plugged in

So my only guess is someone dragged this tx across the ground in a dirt lot or gravel driveway with one or more sensors or the dipstick tube uninstalled, then installed the tx in a hurry and did not plug in the wiring harness(es)

I suppose scenario B is they swamped the truck and the dipstick tube was not in place and gravel somehow flowed into the case, but this seems unlikely

so if I was to clean it all out and reattach everything would it be good to run or should i just go ahead and rebuild my transmission

You can try it. Worth a shot, but, with rocks in the pan.... I wouldn't hold my breath on it lasting very long, if it works at all.
