Greetings - I have a 1997 2500 with 8.0L V-10 (bought in CA). I have been told by my mechanic that I have an issue with the catalytic converter restricting exhaust flow causing loss of power above 3k rpm. I have been attempting to order a new direct fit catalytic converter assembly (becaue I can't weld) twice now and get sent the wrong part. I have learned that most of the V-10 engines have two cats for either side of the engine. My truck has two pipes running from each side of the engine exhaust manifold one of which runs under the engine and that join top and bottom at a single cat on the passenger side. I bought the truck brand new and never had the cat replaced but still get called a liar or accused of modifying things when I return the wrong parts. The assembly on my truck looks like the one that would be ordered for the 5.9L V-8 engine. I am not sure if that one will fit my truck and am interetsed in learning more before I order one. Does anyone know why my cat (ala Sesame Street as a kid) is not like the others? Does anyone know if the 5.9L version will fit on my truck? I live in CO now but do NOT have emissions testing in the county where I live. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Will this fit 1997 Ram 2500 V-10?
Run your vin here, see if the truck came with california, or federal emissions. EPA doesn't test 3/4 ton trucks.... so, no idea if they differentiate the emissions between cali, and the rest of the world.
Possibly. Digging through the parts manual for 96 and 98 (don't have a 97) shows that federal emissions V10s have two catalytic converters but for California emissions it shows Qty: 1. Part number 5210 3201 in 96 and 98 so that should be the same for a 97. Needless to say it's not available anywhere but the number might help tracking down an aftermarket cat.
Walker lists 81512 as a replacement (even CARB compliant) but it requires welding as far as I can tell. Worst case bite the bullet and go to a good muffler place.

This set up is identical to my 99 ram 2500 8.0l. So just want to pop in here to say that not all have two cats. Although mine is now gone the stock set up was y piped down to single pipe with only one cat. Some *** needed mine more then me and I chose to just straight pipe it to rear. Loud as hell but cheaper then replacing entire exhaust as said *** left me only about 5in of pipe from both banks and then about a foot section held up by my rear O2 wires... 😒
