Default 5.9 engine noise

So I have an 02 1500 quad cab 4x4 long bed. I know it’s 3rd gen but I have the 5.9/46re combo

so my truck has 157k. I’ve done Hughes plenum kit, cloyed double roller timing chain, rear main seal, oil pan gasket, valve cover gaskets, full tune up blah blah

so I randomly started getting a noise, happens under load at about 2300-2700 rpms, sounds like a card in a bicycle tire except more metal sounding. It’s a rapid tick, if I gas it it goes away, slow down it goes away or if it shifts it goes away, does it in all gears except OD.

oils full I use pennzoil 10w30 synthetic with molar filter. It’s driving me nuts, when I’m bird hunting going slow it’s right in the range where it ticks and makes it hard to hear, let off gas it goes away.

It’s definitely coming from driver side of engine, cannot duplicate noise at idle, does not tick at all at idle. Engine sounds very healthy minus this tick….

ive owed truck since 125k and I work on vehicle for a living so she’s been treated very well. Any tips? Leaning towards lifter or minor rod knock, but it came outta nowhere. Anyone else have this issue?

Do you think it's lifter tick, or is it spark knock??

I know my 8.0 can rattle quite a bit if the trans gets stupid, and holds lower gears too long. It's done that as long as I have owned it though, and it hasn't gotten any better/worse, regardless of what oil I run in it.

Almost sounds like you're describing a collapsing lifter.

So for hell of it I took out PCv valve today, because that’s where it sounded like it was coming from. Now the noise is much much quieter. Valve wasn’t gunked check ball moved freely…..it’s still there but barley audible now…

Not just the PCV rattling is it? The aftermarket fellers can sometimes be rather loud.

It is original pcv as far as I know…..had about 1/8 tank and threw in $50 of some 93 octane on way home from work. Still had sound but it’s getting quieter. So hard to explain and my exhaust is to loud to hear anything on video (dual mufflers)

So today to work she was doing it badly. Marbles in a tin can sound, but like I said it’s only that rpm range. Going to pull plugs and use extension to rule out rod bearings, really thinking lifter but videos on YouTube have the sound all the time, mine WONT do it while idling, has to be under load for tick to occur…..I hate trying to diagnosis these type of issues

So process of elimination….bought some copper plugs today, I have iridiums in it. Going to swap those tomorrow, the 93 octane did not help anything. I have check engine light for p0308….this comes and goes, usually every 100 miles it pops on, stays on for about 2-300 miles then shuts off by itself go 100 miles no check engine light then 308 again. It’s done this for quite some time, light hasn’t been on recently though. Just came on
wires, cap rotor replaced 2 weeks ago also. Plugs I did last year when I did plenum
