With all four wheels off the ground, yeah, it's gonna grind going into 4x4. The drivetrain is designed for that to happen when you are moving, so most of the parts are already moving at the same speed. With it up on stands, the entire front driveline is stationary, so all that needs to start moving before things can mesh properly.
