That's what I'm thinking may be the cause of your leak. Others may have additional ideas. 272,000 is a lot of miles out of a 1995 5.9 magnum motor prior to a rebuild.

Leakdown test would, but, need the gauges, and an air compressor for that one.
Do the compression test, engine warm, not necessarily 'hot'.... (taking plugs out of a hot motor sucks.) Record your numbers, then do the test again, but, before you test a cylinder, dump a teaspoon of oil into the cylinder. (couple squirts of the pump-style oil can works too.) If your numbers come up significantly, rings are bad.

I have determined the cause of the problem.
It is NOT a crankcase leak
It is power steering hose oil leak.
a small hole in the high pressure hose allowed oil to squirt onto the valve cover making it look that the oil filler cap was leaking
So now i will be ordering the high pressure hose and return hose.
Tip: to find a power steering hose leak, you have to run the engine and have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth. otherwise you will not see any leak
thks for everyones responses. this forum and youtube have allowed me to keep running an old, high mileage vehicle
