the oil is leaking from the oil filler opening in the valve cover. my first suspicion is a bad oil filler cap. anyone else had this problem? 95 ram 5.9L

 

Could be a bad oil filler cap seal and possibly back pressure due to a faulty PCV valve.

 

i have checked the pcv valve. it appears to function properly.
i checked the breather hose and breather cap. it is not clogged
i replaced the oil filler cap

it is still leaking oil at the oil filler cap. any ideas?

 

How well is the motor running and how many miles is on the motor? Wondering if the motor may be having internal issues such as blow-by/extreme wear that may be creating positive internal motor pressure causing the leak you're seeing?

 

the engine runs very good. 272,000 miles. qt oil every 2500 miles. if there was excessive blowby , would there be positive pressure at the oil filler hole when the engine is running. i feel very little positive pressure.

 

That's what I'm thinking may be the cause of your leak. Others may have additional ideas. 272,000 is a lot of miles out of a 1995 5.9 magnum motor prior to a rebuild.

does a compression test confirm (or rule out) blow by problems?

 

Leakdown test would, but, need the gauges, and an air compressor for that one.

Do the compression test, engine warm, not necessarily 'hot'.... (taking plugs out of a hot motor sucks.) Record your numbers, then do the test again, but, before you test a cylinder, dump a teaspoon of oil into the cylinder. (couple squirts of the pump-style oil can works too.) If your numbers come up significantly, rings are bad.

 

I have determined the cause of the problem.
It is NOT a crankcase leak
It is power steering hose oil leak.
a small hole in the high pressure hose allowed oil to squirt onto the valve cover making it look that the oil filler cap was leaking
So now i will be ordering the high pressure hose and return hose.

Tip: to find a power steering hose leak, you have to run the engine and have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth. otherwise you will not see any leak
