Default Gearbox Issues

Hi,

I currently have a 98 Dodge Ram 3500. The gearbox has been having issues getting it into gear so I replace the hydraulics and did an oil change with redline Oil that states its for this box. Then it started to get hard to get into reverse once the hydraulics was changed after doing around 900 miles you would have to switch the truck off to get it into reverse. Now can’t get it into reverse at all even when the truck is switched off. I’ve dropped the gearbox and even with the gearbox out still can’t get it into reverse. The gearbox is a NV4500HD

im looking to see if anyone has tried to put a different gearbox in? I’m a bit reluctant to spend a fair amount of money sending this one away to be overhauled if there is a uk equivalent box that will fit that I can buy brand new?

Being on the other side of the pond does complicate matters a bit..... Are there any transmission shops around that would rebuild it for you? Do you have the time/tools to rebuild it yourself? Granted, waiting for parts is gonna be time consuming....

Hi,

thanks for the replie

yeah we have shops that specialise in rebuilding transmissions and I can get parts to do the rebuild but if there is a gearbox that we have in the UK that’s just as good I’d like to put that in instead of rebuilding this one.

Well nothing is going to be exactly plug 'n play. Even if you get something that bolts up to your block you'll likely be looking at different clutch hydraulics, changing the length(s) of driveshaft(s), shifter linkage issues etc

The popular swap here would be the NV5600 but even here in the States they're worth a small fortune these days. I imagine if you could find one in the UK it'd be at least several months salary....but I could be wrong.

I haven't looked but I bet there's a plethora of decent rebuild kits for the 4500 on ebay, and numerous YT vids that go step-by-step

Far and away the easiest and least expensive will be to rebuild what you already have.

Failing that......check out Advance Adapters as proof that ANYTHING is possible with enough time and money. You can fit anything you want to that motor, it's just about how committed (and commitable) you are

I would drain the oil from the gear box and add a lighter weight oil. Like 5/20 engine oil. I would try this first. You can also use ATF for the oil too. (ATF) Automatic transmission fluid.
