Default 99 engine locked up and stuck in 3rd gear

Hey guys, hoping someone here can help me out. So my 99 has a huge problem right now. It's stumping myself and 2 other mechanics. My truck is currently stuck in third gear and the engine is locked up. Only code it was throwing was for the 3-4 solenoid which was confirmed bad. Replaced it and nothing changed accept tge code is now gone. Still stick in third gear. Can't crank the engine over. Gonna pull the trans today to confirm the engine didn't seize. But has anyone run into this before? I had just got onto the high way when I felt a bang and lost all acceleration. No signs or symptoms prior. Engine stalled out when I got the breakdown lane. Started it back up. Started running like **** with some weird screeching sound like a slipping belt, then died again. Started cranking it over but this time it while cranking it got harder and harder to turn over until it stopped cranking and locked up. I'm baffled here. Please help.

Will the trans go into park, or neutral? If so, should be able to turn the engine with the appropriate sized socket, and breaker bar. (don't put so much force into it you break the bolt though.....) If the engine won't turn, when you pull the trans, the torque converter will have to stay in place. (won't be able to get all the bolts out.) so the trans is going to have to go back a fair distance to get it out....

It will shift on the column but will not move out of 3rd gear no matter what gear I manually put it in. I know it's going to be a pain but that's what I'm doing to get the trans out

Is the shift linkage screwed up? If the external linkage looks good, maybe drop the pan, and see what you find inside.

Already looked. Everything is good. I'm literally baffled. There's no external damage and no signs of damage or anything unusual with the pan off.. also no metal or anything was in the pan when we dropped ot

Take off the serpentine belt, and try and start the engine. I have seen alternators cause an engine to exhibit the same symptoms. (acts like it is seized) I think the trans issue is gonna be something else though......

That was one of the first things i did. All the pullys move freely and slowly the turbo is intact. There's literally no signs of the engine being blown or damaged in any way. Besides the crank not moving.

Der Diesel?? That alters things a bit.....

Try the socket on the crank snout then. Try turning it a little in both directions. If it is hydro-locked, should be able to turn it backwards at least a little. But, if you can't move it either direction, at all...... that implies some variety of mechanical issue. (and it still might be the trans, but, that would have to be a pretty catastrophic failure, and I would really expect to see some evidence of that in the pan.....

How does your oil look? (in the engine?)

That's what I'm thinking cause I can't move the crank in either direction! But no. No signs of anything. Oil is clean and full. Not even a spec of metal. No oil in coolant. Nothing!

Is it a diesel? I'm trying to remember what year the "killer dowel pin" problem got solved. I'm thinking those were 12 valves and the '99 is a 24 valve.
