Hi guys, im new to the forum but browse a lot on here for years now Had a question that perhaps someone can shed some light on for me. I started the process of replacing the shift shaft seal on my 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 gasser and its day 3 with the seal refusing to pop out at all. Now i have the removal tool (which hardly does anything useful) and was trying to use everything from flathead screwdrivers to seal pullers and so far the most progress i made was a handful of trans fluid on the ground and part of the rubber sticking out but the seal itself is still flush with the trans housing. I was wondering as a last resort option of maybe using a 90 degree impact on the removal tool while pressing it down would get it to bite and finally yank this thing out. Im out of options and all my mechanics in town are booked for well over 3 weeks and id prefer to get her running sooner rather than a month down the road. Might try to get some pictures once im off work. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Are you talking about the selector shaft seal that comes off the valve body on the 46RE transmission housing? Yes, a photo or two would help to better understand which seal you're working on...

 

Yes sir its the selector shaft seal, im unable to get under my truck at the moment, it is pouring rain here but this is the location of it just to confirm.

I've done this on a TH350 (and have the removal tool) but it's horizontal rather than vertical.

 

He might want to use a work light also so he can see what he is doing! I have replaced these seals but the valve body was out. Not sure if a small seal puller could get in there.

 

Do you happen to know if that same removal tool works for the 46RE/727 style transmission selector shafts?

I have a magnetic worklight under there and im glad i got that makes life much easier when your not having to wedge a flashlight in there I do have both that seal tool and the puller as well but either seemed to budge it at all. I was contemplating dropping the pan and valve body anyway as the previous owner did not do a good job on the pan gasket anyway, just a lot of extra work to punch out a little seal. If i go that route though will i be able to punch it out with a flathead from the inside out? I dont want to damage anything but if all else fails ill either try to limp her down to my local trans shop Monday or tow it depending how much fluid tries getting out while driving. Only benefit is that i could replace the filter while im in there which im wondering if its the original one anyway.
