Default Transmission question

Hey guys! I have a question. I have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 4x4 360. Was driving the other day and went to pass someone there was a loud thump and the truck downshifted and felt like it popped out of gear and then I had no gear. No reverse or anything. Dropped the pan and theres no metal shavings or anything, the transmission fluid wasn’t burnt. Any ideas what it could be? Havent had any transmission issues before this. No slipping or anything. Any help would be appreciated!
thanks

Do you mean was it in 4 high? It wasn’t when I was driving it, it will go in now but it still won’t move in 4 wheel drive

Ok, I actually meant 2 hi, but, you got the idea anyway.

Unplug the 8 pin connector going to the trans. About halfway back, on the drivers side. That disables computer control of the trans, so, no automatic shifting at all, no TCC, and no O/D. But, if it will move, and shift 1-2-3 when you tell it to, it's just an electronic problem.

Ok, I unplugged the pin, still no gears. I dont know if it means anything but when you start the truck and turn it off something in the torque converter keeps spinning inside after it stops if that makes sense. Could a bad torque converter cause no gears?
thanks again!!

Either, or both. I am thinkin' drop the pan, see what you find. You have a mechanical failure there somewhere.

You may have to drop the valve body to see anything past it.

It should not do that, something is broke.

I'm not sure if he meant in the torque converter or the torque converter itself, I was thinking broken flex plate but, I cant remember if the ring gear is on the flex plate or the torque converter on these, if it was on the torque converter then the truck wouldn't be able to start
