Default Rear Brake Help!

My rear brakes have been giving me hell lately. They make this rubbing noise as I’m driving. I have taken them off and greased the contact points and even went out and bought a new hardware kit. The shoes and drums are only 6 months old and this only started a couple weeks ago. The noise is constant and doesn’t go away, the only time it goes away is when I put it back together and drive it then it’s fine until I take it on another ride then it just squeals. Wheel cylinder is new and seems in working condition.

Now the big question is, where can I buy the highlighted part below without having to purchase a new backing plate! I broke it off while trying to get the spring off and I don’t even know what it’s called anyway to even look for it

Have to buy a new backing plate. Or, get one from a junkyard.

how hard are they to put on? I can’t find anything on how to do it for my truck but I see other vehicles require removing the axle?

Yep, gonna have to pull the axle, take out several VERY rusty bolts, which will likely break.... (no big deal, just have new ones on hand.) and then the plate will just pull off.

Never pulled a axle out before, how difficult is it? I am not too shabby with working on the truck, but never did anything in rear end.

Pull diff cover, remove center pin, push axle in, remove c-clip, pull axle out. It ain't bad. Depending upon the side you need I might have that older style backing plate if you can't easily find one elsewhere

It's messy, and smelly. Gear oil smells terrible. But, Keith is correct, really not that bad of a job.

After trying to find the dang backing plate I am noticing the ones I have found don’t come with the anchor pin. Good news is, the anchor pin is threaded through the back and tightened down by a nut. Bad news is…can’t find one.

Download the parts manual for your truck from the DIY/FAQ section here. See if you can find a part number for it. If you can, do a google search on the part number. See if anything comes up.
