94 ram 1500 5.9 crank no start
So I'm at it again. Bouncing projects. I just got a 94 ram 1500 5.9 4x4 was told by the guy who sold it to me it would crank but not start. He suspected cps. He said he was driving. Ran fine stopped at a red light. Idling fine. Went to take off and it died. Not sputtering stall just like key turned off stall . He was able to get it started again after trying twice and got it far enough off the road then it stalled again same way. Then it would just crank no start. So I got the truck. Changed the battery and fixed the ground wire which honestly could have been broken by me laying in the engine bay Changing the cps. That being said changed the cps. New battery. Fixed ground. Still just cranking. Strong fast crank but no start. I checked the asd relay and it seems to be working fine swapped it out with a working relay. It's getting fuel to the air intake. Just not firing honestly sounds like it not eveven attempting to fire.just crank over.. so I figured I'd start with checking the plug wires Then the coil . Then if I'm not getting spark should I go into the distributor or start checking for wire connection? I really hope there isn't any pcm issue but nothing I've seen shows me there is. Could y'all walk me thru what to do next without throwing money at it wastefully. Unfortunately out of four second gens I have this is the older my next up is a 98 so tho all ,5.9# I'm not sure what I could use to swap from the running one and test without buying first. I know the first thing I grabbed the cps was different. So I half figured there isn't a lot because of the upgrade in 98 with electronics that is gonna be swappable but I've been wrong before! Help a almost poor second gen lover out 😂😭
What is the "cps" ? Crank position sensor or cam position sensor ? In any case, check if the coil gets triggered on the ground side (easy to do with a test light) and if that checks out check spark at the coil, eliminating the distributor. Then check spark at one of the plugs. Spark is triggered by the PCM there is nothing inside the distributor controlling spark timing. If you have spark try starting it on starting fluid, if it pops off you know it's somewhere on the fuel side.
Yes sorry crank position sensor, alright I'll start with the coil. I know the guy before me changed the plug wire on the coil because it's the only one that's yellow. Testing the ground of the coil with a test light do I ground my light near the coil then test the ground with my probe while someone is cranking? I've heard people try to shy away from sticking a test light around to many places on the coil for safety reasons. Not that I'm one big on safety but I'm still learning about electricity flow with these trucks . Thanka for your insight
After doing the crank position sensor and still having no luck I did what I should have done to begin with. I took the coil off and indeed there was about three cracks along the whole thing.. put a new one in and it started right up. I got to drive it for about ten mins and had to bring it to my buddy's shop because it was doing the wave down the road. It has newer shocks and coils all around so that's not the culprit. My buddy said he tightened down the u bolts in the back that were a bit loose but I'm wondering if it's just the brand of shocks. It does have a lift on it, not the stock 3 inch one I think it's a five or a six. All my rams bounce around tho and I hate it. Is there something I can do to remedy that.. weight in the bed or a different type of shocks to tighten up the body bounce off the frame. I'm doing the water pump on the 98 extended cab 5.9 this week as it is now severally leaking from the weep hole not yet gotten to my oil yet tho or overheated so I hope I got it in time. A little confused on where or not I need a heater tube attachment or not.. looking at a few water pumps on ra and some come with them and some don't . Any insight on that y'all? Gonna do the thermostat while I'm in it and the serpatine belt. Any other advice on what to do well I got the front of the engine off thanks y'all
94 ram now having hard shift issues, it gets to about 3k rpm and I have to have foot down on gas for it to shift hard. From start, every gear, and even when she's warm I was told this 46 rh was just rebuilt and it shows signs of it. I'm thinking it could possibly be a throttle issue because my truck isn't idling right at all. When I let off the gas it drops to almost nothing barley enough to keep it running so my question is could my throttle position sensor be causing the hard shifts or should I be looking along the transmission.

First three gears in your trans are purely hydraulic control. PCM has nothing to do with it. I would suspect TV cable out of adjustment, or binding, or something along those lines first. I think your idle issues are a completely separate problem.
So I got under there and looked and the cable looked ok I'll be honest I don't really know what a bad one looks like. There wasn't much slack on the motor end . And the valve moved in and out at the transmission. But the spring is loose as hell. It don't hold the lever in so the valve is open if that makes sense ? Idk if it's supposed to be close usually but the spring is barley even holding the cable in. It takes me a lot of peddle and 3k to force it to shift so I'm guessing that spring is toast. I noticed one of the trans cooler lines was leaking as well so I was wondering if I could use the trans cooler from my 01 5.9 if they was the same or those changed to. My trans fluid is getting hot as hell I can feel the pan hot itself after running awhile. So gonna get the spring and do that. Anything else I should order at the same time?
There is probably still a check valve in the cooler line going to the radiator. Its right where the line transitions from metal, to rubber, just in front of the engine, on the passenger side. The valves like to plug up, and the trans starts running rather hot. Leave it go too long, and it'll smoke the trans. (heat is a killer) There are a couple threads about eliminating it in the FAQ/DIY section here.
Definitely address that spring.
