Default OD is Slipping/Shuddering

1999 Dodge Ram 1500 is making a slipping/vibrating/shuddering when it shifts in and out of OD, only does this in the Od gear, everything else works fine. What is causing this and how to fix?

Does it do it constantly? Or is it ONLY when it shifts?

it’s every time when it goes into OD and goes out of Od so at right under 2000rpm and like 55-70mph in OD. Otherwise it’s fine and everything works perfect. I can put tow haul on and then it never goes into OD and then it never makes the shudder

If it shudders while driving along in overdrive, that is likely a misfire. Mine would feel like it was trying to shake the truck apart.... if it's only when it shifts, probably the O/D snap-ring has failed, so it doesn't engage/disengage properly.... Other possible causes too.... but, those are more esoteric.

well since it’s always at the exact same spots I’d guess the snap ring. I had the pan dropped and oil and filter changed recently in the tranny done by a shop. Would the ring have been loose in the pan? He shoulda seen it then when he dropped it right? Would you recommend dropping the pan again and checking that o ring then? Is it possible to reuse the same
tranny oil? Only been a few hundred miles since it was changed

I would think if there were pieces/parts in the pan, he would have mentioned that..... Wouldn't hurt to drop the pan, and have a look. Drain the fluid into a CLEAN container, and you can re-use it. Also make sure the accumulator pistons aren't broken, and are in there correctly.

Gotta pull the O/D unit off the trans to change that snap ring, and keep in mind that it 'retains' an 800 inch pound spring.... So, need a fixture, and a press.

is fixing the o ring pretty straight forward and easy or is it something I should take it to a shop for? I was trying to find some
videos on YouTube showing how to do it but didn’t find anything on there.

It would be part of a rebuild... If you take it to a shop, they won't wanna just change the snap-ring.. they will want to rebuild the whole trans. Big money. However, if that IS the problem, calling around to the local shops to see if you can find someone willing would be a good idea. Doing it wrong can kill you.

I am going through a rebuild here myself. on my 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 46re Here is a link 46re rebuild and it has everything from tear down to assemble. There is an episode on the overdrive that will help you. I found that both snap rigs came apart in pieces when pressure was taken off. Also Hey is correct. You need a press to be able to change anything in the overdrive. It's under 800 lbs pressure. I bought one for my rebuild off Amazon for about $100 bucks.

Here is link.
