Default Tow haul button fizzled

2001 5.2 4x4 auto trans: tow haul button progressively harder to engage until now seemingly inop. For a while I could get it to work by wiggling shift lever a bit. Any suggestions appreciated, thanks.
Also wondering if I could intercept wires at steering column and install toggle switch?

The wires for that button are tiny, and fatigue over time, and eventually break. Not sure what all is involved in replacing the button/harness.....

I was wondering, too. Our '98 has had the entire plastic end missing for....well, forever. I was thinking it might be nice to replace the entire shift lever, but based upon experience with Fords I don't want Dorman!!! (if they even offer one - not sure)

I am not convinced that you CAN replace *just* the button/wires.... I suspect you would actually need to replace the entire lever.....

But, it's just two wires. Pushing the button just sends a signal to the PCM, PCM does the rest. You could put that button anywhere.

RA lists just the button as a Mopar 56021048 but that doesn't include the other "half" the button lives in. Our '98 is missing every ounce of plastic on the end of the steel shift lever
