Default Howling sound when accelerating

Hey guys been awhile how has everyone been ?

So I have another dodge I’m driving. Now it’s a 2000 5.9 2wd

thing runs great with 200k on it but I’m noticing when accelerating there is a consistent whining sound . When I let off the gas it goes away. Sounds deff from the front somewhere . What could do this on a 2wd ? I checked the drive shaft and there is no slop in the u joints . Maybe harmonic balancer ? I did notice there is a bunch of sludge near the front crank seal and a bit behind the oil pan.
the truck is my dads and I’m just driving it for the summer . I’m assuming it’s been driven like this for awhile and nothing serious has broken down. Just would like to know what it is . My 96 4x4 does not do this at all and has higher mileage

any input would be cool thanks everyone

i would have to try it. What are you suspecting ? Like I said above when the gentleman asked about if it made a sound while in park . It does not all I can hear is a slight lifter tick. I guess only when it’s in drive so maybe it is drive shaft related ?

Yeah, probably removing the belt isn't going to matter then. If it only does it when you are moving, it's driveline related...... Are you sure it's from the front? Nothing up there is powered, unless you are in 4x4.....

I guess maybe mid section ? It’s definitely not loud more like a humming sound I guess too. I checked the driveshaft seems tight

Sounds like you are describing a bad bearing in the rear or u joint. Have somebody get under the truck and look at the u joints when you put it in drive/reverse. See If there is movement in the u joints. Have you checked the fluid in the diff?

so your saying I could possibly see movement in the diff itself just when someone is selecting gears in the truck ? I always thought you had to physically move them which I did and seemed pretty tight . I have not looked at the diff fluid yet I’ve only had it for a couple days . I’m guessing look for debris or dis colouring is what your getting at ?
