Default 2002 Dodge 2500 5.9V8 4WD Differential

How can I find out just what type of rear and front differentials that are on my truck? The truck has a Posi traction differential on the rear and the front is just standard front. I need to replace the fluids and am having difficulty finding the correct gaskets for the covers.

I would suspect you have Dana 60 front and rear differentials. You might be able to put your VIN in here and get the build sheet for your truck:

Yep, with 5.9 gas engine, 2500 had Dana 60's front and rear.

Also, please don't forget to include the necessary additive since you have a limited slip unit in the rear. The additive will keep it from chattering.

No gaskets for the diff covers on my 2001, just RTV. Read the label on the gear oil bottle closely, quite a few have the limited slip additive already in them.

Default Thanks to all who replied!

Thanks to all who replied! Yes I do have Dana 60 front and rear gears. I know the rear has Posi as that's how I ordered it. What is the best gear lube to use? Truck has 129k on it but never replaced the fluids. Don't want to spend a ton of $ on lube as truck is used sparingly now.

If it's just normal driving, 80W90, plus the LSD additive, if you do towing/hauling, 75W140 synthetic, and the additive. I generally just use whatever the parts store has on the shelf. (castrol, mostly.)

I changed the rear lube and used Castrol, I think. I got the 75-90 full synthetic. As for the gasket, I just used RTV. The Castrol had limited slip additive and came in a plastic bag. A lot handier than trying to get underneath and fill the unit with a bottle. Much faster and you get all of it in there.
