Default Swapping trans 1998 into 2001

Does anyone here know if all 1998-2001 46RE's are 3 prong connectors, or can they also be 4 prong?

Thanks!

Internal electronics are different. I don't remember when they went to the 5 (4?) pin gear position sensor.

About 10 yrs ago I swapped a 2000 ram 46re into a 98 durango. You have to swap valve bodies. Although the 2000 electronics plug into the 98 harness, in 2000 they went to a pressure transducer setup vs a solenoid and the computer gets cranky and throws an over temp light, also has a hard time with locking the converter. The valve bodies are interchangeable and line up fine.
98-99 are the same electronics
00-02 are the same electronics

FYI the shift pattern is also different in the 2000+ 46re computers. pre 2000 the shift pattern on normal accel is 1-2-3-4-4tc locked. 2000+ is 1-2-3-3tc locked-4 tc locked. I also holds 3rd a little longer in the 2000+ 46re trucks.

Both my 96, and my 98 lock TCC before hitting fourth gear.

Only time it should be locking in 3rd is when the O/D off is active for those years. It's also mph dependent, ~38mph on the 1500s. Idk if the 2500/3500 follow the 45/52 mph lockup the 47re does.

Both my trucks were 2500's, 96 was 46RE, 98 is 47RE. In both, I would get TCC before O/D..... right about 43 mph. (of course, my speedo is off by about 10% or so.... due to tire size....)

For the v10 it also depends on if you have the updated programming. Mine has it, the converter locks 52mph. It was supposed to address a lack of power complaint since locking the converter at 43mph with 3.55s means locking at low rpms.

Lack of power on the v-10? That's not a complaint I ever seeing myself having. But then, I have 33" tires, and 4.56 gears...... I could push the house off the foundation, and I don't even need the right tires.

Not to derail to much more on this thread but by keeping the converter unlocked you would get the sensation of more power by increasing the rpm with throttle light throttle instead of needing to depress the accelerator so much to get the converter to unlock and downshift to 3rd. I know with my 35s and 4.10s if it locked at 42mph it would feel a little sluggish trying to accelerated at 1300rpm, especially loaded.

So did you use the 2000 transducer & governor or the 1998? I just swapped a 2000 into a 98 and I’m getting the same issue where it shifts fine and runs good but after a block or two it throws the temp light and od/off
