Default Rebuilt 46re Tranny Issues

We've just freshly rebuilt the 46re transmission. When it went out there was no gears except reverse. We figured out that the planetary gear was completely destroyed. We cleaned and replaced every seal, thrust plate, and clutch packs, steel packs and cleaned the valve body. It was running fine whenever we took it for a drive. The transition into drive was pretty rough. It shifted smoothly but stopping at a stop sign, it jumped like it went back into drive. We kept going, stopped at a stop light and it was gone. Nothing. No gears whatsoever, the transmission was completely unresponsive. What could this be? We're completely stumped but we do suspect the torque converter, we did not replace it. We did replace the governor pressure and shift solenoid.

Did you flush out the transmission lines & cooler before installing the rebuilt/repaired transmission?

Sounds like you're going to need to drop the transmission pan to see if there is any metal or damaged parts in the pan. From there, the transmission will need to be pulled to replace the faulty torque converter, at a minimum. Sounds like metal from the original transmission cycled into the newly repaired transmission and likely caused the issues you're having now.

Congrats, you just wasted the time and money you spent rebuilding your trans. Now you get to do it again. It simply is not possible to clean all the crap from a grenaded trans, out of the torque converter. When you rebuild the trans, you replace the torque converter, else, you get to do it again.

There hasn't been much metal shavings in the new fluid. We did flush the lines, one line was clogged and we thought we had it fixed but the cooler line still has no pressure.

Not replacing the torque converter had a similar effect. The transmission will likely have to come out and be redone..

We have figured it out, a week ago we tested the wiring harness to make sure there was power running through it and the wiring harness was fine. We ran more tests yesterday and figured out the PCM is messing up.
As for the torque converter, we'll go ahead and replace that too.

If you see ANY metal in the trans fluid, I would go thru it again before installing another converter......

In addition, check to ensure that there is no coolant in the transmission fluid either. In some rare cases, the transmission coolant line inside the radiator can crack and allow coolant to get into the transmission fluid. If you see coolant in the transmission fluid, plan to replace the radiator as well.
