tach instal!
That's just odd.... it should be able to pick up on the PCM triggering the coil...... There are other members that have installed aftermarket tachs on their trucks..... at this point, I don't have a clue.... (I have a tach in my cluster....)
Have you considered just swapping out for a cluster that already has the tach? From what I understand, it is a direct replacement.....

Tomorrow I'm gonna double check all the tach wires just to be absolutely sure that the wires are not to blame.I also wonder if the tach itself is a dud.I'm gonna have to test it on another car or truck to be sure.Thanks for all your help.
If anybody has found any more information about installing an aftermarket tach please let me know. I want to install one, but I dont want to commit into buying a tach if I dont know what all I will need or how difficult it will be.
Ive tried this too on my 95. wired it all up except i tried everything to avoid wiring into my 12v fuse block in with the ignition fuse. otherwise when i turn my truck off. the tach resets and needle is way off. its a eqquis back lit tach. really want to have one put on too. it has inductive pick up too. seems im not the only person whose had troubles. I just cant figure where to wire mine so it will turn on when i turn the key and off when engine is off but not reset itself. by doing that i have to wire it into the igntion fuse apparently

Nowhere on the dist to plug in a tach on our trucks. PCM should have a tach output, but, I am not entirely sure just what flavor of signal it puts out, and if an aftermarket tach would know what to do with it.
Some folks have simply swapped out their no-tach cluster, for one that has it, and it was plug and play. Odometer is an issue though.

If the truck is prewired for tach, even though tach was not installed at factory, wouldn't there be a connector behind the cluster to connect to? I know there are unused connectors on mine for fogs, something behind the right headligh, and under hood by lamp....
I haven't looked at the connections for the dash.... but, the tach signal is just one wire, and it MAY just come from the CTM on newer trucks....... which won't help at all. God only knows what communication protocol they use...... The inductive pick up style would most certainly be easiest, after just swapping for a cluster with a tach.
