Question 2001 Ram 2500 5.9L gas - cranks but no start when warm - crank or cam sensor??

I have a 2001 Ram 2500 quad cab with the 5.9L gas. Love the truck, it's a real workhorse but I have an ongoing issue. It will crank and start up beautifully when the engine is cold. I run it down the road and drivability is good but the issue happens when I get to my destination (i.e. Home Depot). After being warm and running, it won't start up again. Cranks real well, but won't start back up until I let it sit for like an hour - hour and half. Some other items to note:

- I'm not getting a "No bus" or similar message on the dash that would lead me to believe the ECM is going bad. But, you never know. I have tried to tap on it when the engine is warm but won't start with no results

- I've put my fuel pressure gauge on the fitting on the driver's fuel rail, and fuel pressure seems good both during cranking and when I stop cranking.

- I'm getting a continuous check engine light and code of P0340, which states it's the cam position sensor.

At this point, I'm leaning towards it being either the crank position sensor or the cam position sensor in the distro. Any thoughts??

Code points at the cam sensor. That one tells the PCM where the engine is in the firing order, if it doesn't know, it doesn't know which injector to fire, so it doesn't fire any of them......

When I had that no-start issue, it was the crank sensor sporadically going bad. Your code points to the cam sensor in this case. To possibly get around the no-start condition, try disconnecting the battery cables, touching them together and re-connecting them to the battery. This would reset the PCM for me and allowed me to get home. I later changed the crank sensor with a OEM crank sensor and no more issues to-date..

It's the cam sensor. In the later second gens the cam sensor is only used during startup, when it gets hot and stops working the truck won't start until the sensor cools down.

Can do it with your feet on step, Your gut on the radiator support and your hands out like Super Man. Then you need a mirror to see the screws on the distributor and the screwdriver in the other hand. Fun stuff!

Lol thanks, and I'm going to try for the cam position sensor.

Did I mention that I'm only 5"8"?

5' 8" isn't short! I'm just a bit taller myself. When I work on the engine in my truck, I typically use a foldable step stool on one side of the truck to gain better access to engine. One of these days, I'll pickup a topside creeper when I can either find a used one or Harbor Freight starts making them at a decent price.

I'm surprised they haven't yet. They have english wheels why not a top side creeper? I think it would sell more than a english wheel.
