You can always just download a speedo app for you phone and run that until you get it figured out on the truck. That is what I am using for my 96. Mine is about 8 miles an hour off. I have a new speedo sensor, but haven't installed it yet due to the new sensor having a different plug that I need to install. Waiting until it gets warmer.

On the 96, all you should need to do is change the drive gear for the VSS.......

You think the drive gear is NG? The truck is running stock tires with no lift.

Did not do anything to it. The truck was given to me and the owner that gave it to me wouldn't have done anything to it. Maybe the previous owner changed the gearing. It was used to hall a bed camper before my friend got it. I was thinking that the sensor went bad. The truck is stock from what I can tell of it.

Is it off a percentage of 'real' speed? Or is it consistently off 8mph??

Consistently off by 8 mph according to the speedo app I use and the radar speed signs I go past.

Ok, that's just odd...... Maybe a calibration issue in the cluster itself? Does the PCM get the right speed?

What color/ gear tooth count do you have in it? Are the gears meshed? If not the gear may slip slowing the mph you are seeing.

I will pull it when it gets warmer. The MPH is actually faster then what the MPH app or the radar signs are reading. Thank you for the link. Next time I dk I will snap a pic with another phone to show the difference.
