IF you're running rich and misfiring, i would expect an excessive amount of fresh soot build up. Get it running correctly and drive awhile and then reinspect.

Nothing wrong with a 3.9 V-6. I've got one in a '96 Dodge Dakota with over 300,000 miles on it. After working on it a bit, it's running like a clock, however, it is on an OBD2 PCM...

Just out of curiosity, did you install the timing chain or did a garage do it? Was the procedure followed in the manual and all of the marks lined up? I'm wondering if it is out of time with the timing gear installed.

2pfspiff, I did the job, made sure both dots where facing each other ( cam dot down and crank dot up), also made sure to torque it to spec, I did follow a You tube video. My marks were unaligned since the cam gear was messed up so I realigned them dots then placed the new chain on.

I apologize if this was covered, but I was unaware of the misaligned timing set. Have you check compression? I wonder about a bent valve

Checked the compression, 2 and 4 were low and I checked the valves and I had bent push rods.
