But the brass fitting should unthread, unless the hex is just there to allow you to hold it when tightening?

On many radiators (eg '06-10 Exploders) the cooler line discos are notorious and you often just have to unthread the whole fitting from the radiator -- it's simply easier and safer.
Unfortunately, I don’t possess the tool nor knowledge to use a die.. I just haven’t got that far yet. But I’m pretty sure even with a die you’d have to move down to the next size anyway..
I definitely think it would be easier and safer if that fitting unthreaded but I’m certain it doesn’t.
