Best 46RE Reman/Rebuild Options
Howdy all,
I've been perusing some old forum posts regarding what the best options are for a 46RE rebuild or purchasing a remanned unit and unfortunately it seems like a lot of the old recommendations (Viper transmissions
) no longer sell remanned 46REs. Does anyone have any suggestions for a reputable rebuilder? On the flip side, is the Sonnax Sure Cure still one of the better options as far as rebuilding it myself?
Just looking to get some forward thinking done since my transmission wasn't able to tow a trailer uphill (less than 3 tons) without completely overheating. Turns out the prior rebuilders never adjusted the bands so I was having crazy slippage and found a significant amount of metal in the pan. Guessing my transmission has a limited life after that stunt.
Thanks!

Rumor has it, that a lot of the 47/48R? parts fit inside the 46 case...... Though I think the usual failures on the 46 are O/D clutches...... So, a 'good' rebuild kit, with upgraded, and MORE, clutches/steels is what you are looking for. A fair few of the kits I used to recommend, don't seem to be available any more though... So, not entirely sure what to suggest here...
They actually do have stuff for the 46, but, you have to search for it, it doesn't show up on it's own.....
They use to have Raybetos bands/kits for the 46re/rh, Nothing comes up even if you search for it. They also used to have two different kits for the" 518/46RH Lock Up and Overdrive Switch Kit" for the RH transmissions, I used the description in the old link I saved and nothing comes up. Remember the "megaviper" transmissions(and kits) they had, GONE! Just a fraction of the former PATC, Have to find someplace else to find parts.

This is the place I plan on ordering from. He has a great video series on rebuilding it also. And he personally answered the phone and answered my amateur questions for about 15 minutes without me even buying anything yet. Great guy.

My local transmission rebuilder was getting many of his parts from these folks - https://www.wittrans.com/
He also mentioned to me that obtaining the necessary parts for a 46RE rebuild is getting harder.

I am very happy with the improvements.
Shifts are quicker and firmer. It doesn't search for gears. I have a 4 core radiator so everything stays cool. I have not installed the trans temp gauge.
I tow a 6000lb (when empty) toy hauler and no issues. I am very happy with the build. Glad I did it.
