241 DHD transfer case - what to consider for a spare?
I'm thinking of picking up a spare 241 DHD transfer case for my '96 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 with a 46RE transmission. I know I need a 241 DHD from an early model Ram 2500 with the VSS provision, but is there anything else I need to consider? I seem to think that a 241 DHD from a Cummins/manual transmission truck may not work with my setup, but I wanted to check with others that know more than I do about these transfer cases. Please advise...
That's the information I'm trying to understand. I believe this transfer case may have come from behind a 47RE. I was hoping the output shaft of the 47RE transmission had the same splines as the 46RE transmission. I know the 47RE had beefier guts, such as beefier drums, higher planetary pinion count, etc. Can anyone else provide some information on this issue regarding the 241 DHD transfer case swap??
Tried looking up input gears for the t-case, but, there are like 6 different ones, and they don't specify what the differences are..... even filtering by engine, trans, and cab style, still get six results....... Probably need to talk to someone at a gear shop of some sort, to get reliable information on interchangeability there.
Gas, 46RE 241DHD? never realized this combo existed, or did you swap? I thought 1500 trucks used a 231 and 2500 used 241DLD
The newer non provision cases will work with swapping the housing and drive gear, the shaft provision was still present on the one i swapped, (95 to 01 swap) however the shift pattern is also different, and the swaps ive done manual/auto all had different inputs, and the 46rh/re from 95 to 01 swap also required a different input shaft, it was due to the depth of the nose on the inut where the seal rides

DLD vs DHD was just PTO, no?
Our '02 2500 is 4wd, CTD, D80/70 hybrid rear with discs, NV5600, 4.10 and it got the DLD. So, basically as heavy duty as you could possibly get with the "light duty" t-case.
The input spline count is the big thing. But you can disassemble the planetary and swap this. I've done it, and machined the earlier narrow bearing version to accept the later, wider bearing. Starting at Post #23 here

I guess I've never dealt with a 2500 V8, I had a 96 v10 with a 47re and that was a 241dld i believe, just figured the big motors had the 241 and the little motors had the 231. The snowplow and hd packages would both make sense i guess. No two ram trucks built the same lol
