Rear end problems
Just fixed the transmission and now this. While driving down the road at maybe 40 mph in 3rd gear going to 4th I hear this noise. It whines and a buddy of mines 94 ram did the same and it finally locked up on him today. *** end broke lose and threw him in the ditch, he wasn't heart but I don't want this to happen to me. Does anyone know what could be going out and what I need to look for to replace, I don't even know what kind of rear end it is. Im in the dark on this one guys.
Come on someone has to have replaced a rear end before. It doesn't seem that hard and someone on this forum has had to have had this noise before and fixed it. I just need me some help.
If your truck is a 1500 series you have a 9.25 rear end. Do a search of this forum as myself and others have described how to inspect it for problems. If you have a ring/pinion gear problem or ring/pinion gear bearing problem you should just take it to a reputable shop to have it fixed. Make sure it's not your tranny to since it sounds like it was just worked on.
Well about 5 months ago when the transmission first went out, I heard this noise but didn't know what it was but had a clue because this same noise I had he did and it was the rear end. Off the top of your head can you tell me what a 5 speed transmission take, gear oil wise.
Sounds like bearings in the rear. Mine made a howling noise for months. Since I bought it actually. I thought it was the tires. Ended up getting it fixed under warranty. Now that noise is gone but I thinkthe tranny is starting to go. Oh well.
I doubt the ring and pinion is going to howl. I'd have to agree and say its your bearings. I'm sure you can buy just the bearings or you can get a Master Install Kit and replace all the seals, bearings, ect. They run you about $100. http://www.drivetraindepot.com

They wear pretty quickly, so if it was wear you'd think it would stop kinda quickly. But that would screw up your ring and pinion pretty good. [&:] Take your cover and look for grooves or wierd marks on your ring. Also look for metal shavings.
