on older motors, when you heard it pinging, you'd back the timing off just a hair till it's gone. Pinging = loss in power in my book. I dont believe it is normal for a motor to ping under any load.

my problem is not light pinging... it's pretty sevear... enough for me to back out of the throttle all the way when it happens...

I thought there was only 1 octane out there... 91...? huh? jk I wish i could get 93 though...

the best I can get is the 100 stuff across the freeway. but at 5.25/gallon... makes fillups kinda expnesive. there are a couple of stations that are cheeper, just not close.

What's your CR Steve? I'm running 10:1 in my old car and have to run 93.

ryans590, You won't be able to hear really really light pinging when in the cab, but you should be able to hear most pinging. It's a sound that shouldn't be there and you'd notice it if you heard it.

dont know what the CR is now... it's a stock block with the R/T heads. I think the CC is smaller on the R/T's so the CR would go up some but i'm not sure how much.

The smaller combustion chamber will boost the CR. I think stock is around 8.4:1, so you should be in the ballpark of 9:1 or a little higher. You SHOULD be able to run 91 with no problems. Has the distributor been messed with at all?
