Swapped the Fuel Pump...
I did the fuel pump swap yesterday... my problem is still there (major pinging under heavy load). The job took about 1.5~2.0 hours and was pretty easy. I did a writeup last night since everything was still fresh in my mind and submitted to the DIY fourm admin. with pics.
For all of you who are considering yanking the bed... do it as a last resort... dropping the tank was pretty easy. your biggest problem might be getting the strap bolts free, I soaked mine prior to dis-assembly and they came apart pretty easily.
All of this is great news though... that means my ~14.0 milage is a good number... I was thinking It was that good because the fuel pressure was dropping out slightly. that doesnt seem to be the case.

I hate to say this, but that's why I plan on replacing all three at once. I always look to head off Mr. Murphey.

Steve,
I recently read an article that said pinging is normal under heavy conditions such as driving up a hill or pulling a trailer from a stop. It will not hurt the motor unless it is heavy pinging which is detonation causing the motor to fire earlier than when the piston is at the top of the cylinder. I mainly deal with GM motors specifically GEN 1 motors. The way I fix this is backing off of the timing a little. I know you're motor is fairly modified, so you may be able to reset the timing on your truck. Just an idea.
