5.4 puts out decent power, but it has a cam in each head that is chain driven. NO THANKS! expensive to repair and not fun to work on. i used to own fords, but wont buy into there 4.6/5.4 engines.

ram2860 you arn't kidding on the expense of repairing a 5.4. wifes uncle has one and stripped out a plug while changing them and wound up pulling the head and sending it to a machine shop. Big time ouch!

The Triton 5.4L V8 will NOT out perform a Magnum 5.9L V8. That is just a plain fact. The 5.9L was a very solid motor and was seriously underrated as you can get the exact performance out of it as you can a Hemi and for a lot less money too. Dont argue....go look it up...

The factors you have to consider when trying to do this comparison are the actual weights of the truck and the grip you can put down on the ground. Just comparing HP/Torque numbers is STUPID. Compare an SRT-4 Neon to a Mustang GT.....guess who wins at the 1/4 mile? The Neon..... HP/Torque mean squat if you cant put it down on the ground...not to mention if you're already a couple car lengths behind....

I'll confidently tell you that you should in fact beat him everytime you two were to race.....however, it all depends on how you drive it and how well you drive it...

And for the record....the F-150 Lightning was ONLY a 4x2 and it was it supercharged.....so its not even a comparison to his truck guys...

I think my truck would outdo a 5.4...

As for the lightnings, they are a joke... My friend had one with a supercharger on it the day he bought it... Sure it was able to tear up the tires and what not, but he also blew the f-in motor the next month... I towed it back to his house with a v6 Chevy full size

I had a 99 Ford F-1sh*ty with the 5.7 Triton. I wasnt impressed with it at all, I think my 5.2 with the death flash is more powerful than that POS was. Sad part is, that truck was Brand New and the dodge I have now is 5 years old.

Seriously, go up to this guy with a log chain and hook up your trucks hitch to hitch and then ask him where he would like you to pull his truck, cause he isn't gonna be able to do sh*t.
ORIGINAL: jnellydodge

Ok there is this one guy i work with who thinks he knows everything and was trying to tell me his 99' F-150 4x4 would out-pull and perform my 98' Ram 1500 4x4. I told him that i would **** on his pos ford (just joking b/c i honestly dont mind fords or chevy's, they're just no dodge), and he proceeds to tell me that my motor only makes 220 horses, and bragged how is made 10 more horses. Then he said his makes more torque then mine! At that, i calmly got up out of my chair, strolled out into the parking lot, climbed into my truck and got the original window sticker, came back and slammed it down in front of him. It said right on there this 5.9 Rated at 245 hp, 345 (i think) Ft lbs torque. He was still smarting off to me but i said whatever b/c i could honestly care less at this point. I am speaking out of anger a little bit still here but i just wanna double check if anybody would agree with me that the 5.9 is a better motor than the 5.4 in his 99'. Damn some people get so defensive about their vehicles!!!!

I guess what i am asking is which is the better TRUCK TRUCK motor, the 5.9 or the 5.4??

as devilsreject said, variables can change things. tire size can effect gear ratio, as gear ratio can also. 2x4, 4x4, it all ads up. but, a wise old man once told me there is no substitute for cubic inches. i think he is right on that one.
