Default Doing a tune-up and want some pointers

Ok, so while my license is suspended for 3 months, im gunna do a complete tune up of my truck, because after my truck sitting for a week, i went to go start it, and it threw a cylinder #2 missfire code at me. I Would just like some info on some parts u guys think are good.

im replacing the following:
PCV Valve
Crank Case Breather
Cap
Rotor
Plugs
Wires
Also gunna check the plenum while in in there.

I Just would like to see what u guys have used and have worked for u.

Also, i tried doing a search for any tips on removing the cap, but i couldnt find any was wondering if there were any tricks to it?

Thanks guys

If modification is in your future you shoud look at a good set of wires like MSD or Taylor brand. I think most people on here reccomend getting the MOPAR cap and rotor or anything with brass terminals is good. The plugs should probably be either Champion truck plugs or Autolite 3923's.

There is no real trick to removing the cap. Once you get the air cleaner off it is not that hard IMO.

I just replaced my cap and all you do is unscrew two little screws on the side of it. I just got a replacement mopar cap and rotor but everything I have read says to get one with brass terminals

well for brand wise your kinda limited for PCV and crank case breathers.. theres no real performance options in those

cap and rotor you can get a napa for 15 bux and are the best to run...brass tipped gives you best connections

plugs champions or the autolites work the best for these motors... stay away from the hype that bosche puts out there about the multiple tipd crap.. they suck

wires... only three letters my friend M S D! i put them on my truck and i love them... huge 8.5MM conductors...cant bea tit... pricey but you get what you pay for... i also add a 6A box so my experience is most likley biased...

could you explain why you wanna change the crank case breather? are you talkin about the passenger side tube that plugs into the intake for vacume and gas removal purposes? if so i cant imagine anything being wrong with it... if anything id go with a crank case filter..

Steve and Shott - I found a breather filter today at Autozone, Spectre part# 42859 $13 Plugs right in to the grommet. I got a 5/8" heater hose cap and put in on the air cleaner with a hose clamp. (couldn't find a 1/2" cap anywhere) Don't know if it helps or hurts things but for $20 I figured I would try it. Got ya'all a pic of what it looks like....

this came out of a thread that talked about what a mentioned above and the results that came from it... read up on it and it may intregue you!

I found some like 10.5 MM wires on ebay... Would that be better than MSD 8.5?

I don't know what the cut-off is for aftermarket wires to still fit in the stock wire looms but I am sure you would have to change the looms out to fit those 10.5 wires.

My 8.5mm MSD wires did not fit in the stock wire holders. I had to ream them out with a drill. So I know 10.5 mm wires won't fit in the stock stuff. I would be a little concerned with the 10.5's being too big to fit well in the limited space offered by the small size of the distributor cap. When I put my MSD's on I reused the plastic split loom from the factory wires - and that made it a very tight fit around the cap......

same here..forgot to mention that... the 8.5s i had to jam onto the cap and hope they stayed put

i realy wish someone would manufacture a dist. cap thats similar to the LS1 LS6 caps... that are flat on the top and have the posts for the cap horizontal instead of vertical.... you have on in hte middle for the coil and then you ahve 4 on each side and its sequential.. meaning that 1 through 4 are somehow in the correct firing order...

like this pic!

I'm not an expert, but I have done a far amount of research on this topic. There is really no point in going with anything over 8mm with stock ignition in my opinion. The break-over voltage of most plugs (the minium voltage it takes before a plug starts conducting or transferring its charge elsewhere) is actually lower then the breakdown voltage (minimum voltage needed to breakdown and surpase the insulation) of 8.5mm, 8.0mm and even most 7.0mm wires. In other words, your plug will be a problem before your wires ever are. It is usually just old, bad, cracked wires that cause arching and other wire problems, not lack of insulation.

The only real reason to go with larger wires if you have an upgraded ignition that requires it, or to prolong wire life (since thicker insolation will take longer to deteriorate). I think the stock wires are 7.0mm. I run the Mopar Performance 7.5mm wires. Very happy with them. Now if I ever upgraded to a Blaster coil/MSD ignition set-up, I might bump it up to 8.0mm or 8.5mm.

Does anyone know what the biggest size of wire you can possibly get to fit in the stock wire holders is? I am going to swap the NAPA 7.5's I have now out for something different, do you think I need go to something bigger to get the full benefits of my MSD box? The wires I have now are the highest performance ones they make for my truck, they had some cut to fit ones but I didnt want to go to all that trouble.
