xtreme wheeling...lots of damage :( wheel falling off
oy...night started out good, but here's my truck at the end...i'll put some more details later about that night. i am proud that my truck made it through a hell of a lot of mud and ruts and everything else, but broke the hub or something right as i was leaving. f$%ed up some other stuff in there too, take a look. also i am leaking gear lube out of that side of the axle now...looks very milky, guess water got in there. is there a seal or something i'm gonna have to replace in there too? i didn't look yet, but will the diagrams in the 2001 service manual be the same for '98?
any advice/directions on how to go about fixing are greatly appreciated. thanks

RE: xtreme wheeling...lots of damage :( wheel falling off
also, my brakes are screwed up now too...pedal falls to the floor sometimes, and stays there for a bit. gotta find out where, but its losing some brake fluid too. the axle shaft slides out of the housing quite a bit too...i didn't get the hub off or anythin yet, but it looks like stuff pretty bashed up in there. as you can see in the pic, the axle shaft and right around the u-joint are scratched up quite a bit, but they are nto cracked or anything. should i change those out too? why would i be leaking gear lube, is there a seal further in the axle that i might have broken? if so, is that very hard to change? thanks...

Your U-joint also doesn't look so good on that side. Hard telling what will need to be replaced...you won't know until you pull the tire and hub off and get a better look at it.

Rom is right, there is a seal, and the Dana 60 and Dana 44 seal replacement is the same. So you will have to pull the differential out in order to do so. Pavementsucks.com has a few tech articles I really think you need to read up on. Looks like your hub is toast, your ujoint, and possibly your axle shaft as well. Your breaks will not work properly since the wheel is almost falling off. You could have trashed a break like too. The inner seal on the Dana 44 would fail anytime that the axle shaft doesn't stay center in the axle tube. It's not center any more since the hub is toasted. Not hard to change. The front diff is pretty easy to remove and replace, its not like your rear diff where you have to check back lash and everything. Mainly because its not your drive axle, unless your drive on the highway all the time in 4X4. When you do replace it I would really check out that axle shaft. It would really suck to do all the work and have the axle shaft break next time your out, or try and make a sharp turn. Last time I checked, the hubs from Napa run 250 a peice, and ujoints are usually pretty cheap, under 50 bucks. Good Luck!
Yes the 2001 manual has the same Dana44 that your truck has.

Looks like brake pads, rotor, possibly caliper bolts and caliper, u-joint, seal, hub, and thats just a quick glance.
Look over everything very closely and check for fatugue
I had similar happen to me with my chev, and wasnt as bad as that and was around the $1000 mark, for parts alone.
What every you do, dont drive on it, the only thing that looks to be holding it all in is the caliper to the rotor
Very Well done

With your brake fluid, I would guess that the caliper pistons are pushing the pads too far out in order to contact the rotor, and maybe you are getting some leakage from behind the pistons. It would be easy to spot a brake line leak, but if you can't find any, I say the pistons are leaking. It's not necessarily a permanent leak, they might be fine once the caliper and rotor are mounted up right again.
To me it looks like the spindle bolts broke or came out, not the bearing nut. In the last pic, looks like the spindle just came off of the knuckle. If that's the case, you probably need to replace the spindle and bearings (not because the bearings are bad, but you don't want to reuse old bearings anyway) but the hub might be fine. Were you putting a lot of pressure against the inside of the wheel when it broke?
Be proud. Nice battle wounds and chicks dig scars. Hope everything works out for ya
