Default Flowmaster vs. straight pipe

Hey, I've been doing some work on my truck the past few weeks and I am running some guinea pig testing on it. I put me a body lift on it and man it sits up high now. I am looking into putting a suspension lift on there in a few years. Anyway, was changing out my exhaust and found this out. I cut my muffler off and noticed some rust flakes so I decided to blow it out with the engine. I was not impressed with the sound of a straight pipe. Not very loud at all. Anyways, I have a couple different mufflers in my garage. I tried these: Flowmaster 40 and Flowmaster 40 Delta Flow. The 40 was awsome...just awsome sounding. The delta flow was good but could not touch the 40. I am fixing to put on a 50mm TB to test that out. I'll let you know the outcome.

If you want loud then go with the flowmaster 10 series, it is basically the same volume of a straight pipe but just tunes the sound to a flowmaster tone, sounds like an old muscle car. Although they are not legal on the street, but i do not know how one would be able to tell that it is a race muffler.

I dont know how advanced the cops are where you are from but here in and around detroit michigan cops have meters and there is a certain sound level i think its 55 dBa here.

Correct! The state patrol in WI has them as well. They will also look under your vehicle (and even crawl under) if they suspect something is wrong/illegal. They usually won't do that though...unless they're having a bad day [>:]

really, i did not know that they used decible meters, i mean i firgured they would have something like that, but have never heard of them being used before. I live in mass and have a 10 series open with a high flow cat so far and have not been hassled at all before, i've had cops behind me at redlights and i did not realize it and accelerated somewhat hard and still have not been pulled over. When they do inspections and they see that you have an aftermarket exhaust do they use a decible meter? I have not had to get it inspected since i put this muffler on.

Well I have a 4 inch diesel pipe after my 40 series and that enhances the sound. No real loss in torque either. Once I add a high flow cat. I am sure the sound will improve. I did add the TB last night. I put a 50 mm instead of the 52mm that everyone else uses. Some noticeable improvements in throttle response. Did not really open her up yet. Once I adjust my trans linkage from the body lift I will get her on the pavement to see what the difference is.
